Researcher and Clinician information about the Early Intervention Mission study.

Background

We are leading a UK-wide longitudinal study designed to transform our understanding of early psychosis, its progression, and how to develop personalised, preventative interventions. Our goal is to identify early risk markers and improve long-term psychiatric, social, functional, and physical outcomes for individuals affected by psychosis.

The study is building a rich dataset from 2,000 individuals with First Episode Psychosis (FEP) or At-Risk Mental State (ARMS), alongside 500 control participants. Drawing on promising early findings from blood biomarkers and routinely collected health data, this research will lay the foundation for future clinical trials across the NHS, academia, and industry - driving innovation in treatment and prevention.

Invitation to new sites

Participants recruited via an NHS Trust will be aged 16–65 and begin with an in-person visit for blood sample collection and detailed health and lifestyle assessments. Ongoing data collection is also carried out online, allowing participants to regularly report on their mental state, lifestyle, and cognitive state, over a period of up to three years, with minimal disruption.

We are actively inviting new sites to join this important research. Participation involves a relatively low operational burden, focused on recruitment and the initial study visit. Sites can opt into one of three tiers of blood sample collection:

  • Tier 1: whole blood, posted at room temperature on day of collection
  • Tier 2: serum and plasma (includes Tier 1), processed on site
  • Tier 3: Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMC) (includes Tiers 1 and 2), processed on site
